1. General information

1.1. Aims of the course

Social Work is developed within a social context. In this way, the Social Structure, along with other subjects of the same learning module (Sociology and Social Processes), tries to introduce the student to the knowledge of this essential context in which to develop their profession. Before starting this subject, students are supposed to have basic knowledge of sociology and this subject aims to deepen in the knowledge of some key features and processes for the compression of our current society. It also emphasizes on the structure of inequality, whose existence justifies the reality of social work.

1.2. Context and importance of this course in the degree

The subject belongs to the module C of the studies plan, the one that is responsible for the processes and problems where social work acts, along with other subjects such as psychology, economics, etc. As it is taught in in the second semester of the second year, students are supposed to have some general knowledge already acquired in the three previous semesters. And in the same way, this subject will help them with the content of the subject Social Processes (3rd year) as well as with the practicum and some optional subjects.

 

 

1.3. Recommendations to take this course

To take this course and for a correct learning process is very important to remember and to take account of the contents of the subject General Sociology (1st year). It is also necessary to spend some time reading the selected texts. Exceptionally (due to inevitable causes or calendar problems), some changes can be done in the contents of this guide.

2.1. Competences

After passing the subject, the student will be more competent to...

· Defend individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities and act on their behalf if the situation requires it.

· Get on well in the exercise of the profession with better knowledge of the reality where the social worker has to act and with better approach to the decisions that have to be taken.

· Know and understand critically the main aspects of the imbalances and social and power inequalities and the mechanisms of discrimination and oppression (in particular the ones derived from economic relations and of work, gender, ethnic and cultural rights).

· Know and understand critically the main aspects of social conflict, the mechanisms of power and authority, of domination, exploitation and alienation, and perspectives of different social sciences on these processes and mechanisms.

· Analyze and evaluate the impact of inequality and discrimination in the workplace with people in particular contexts and problematic situations.

2.2. Learning goals

The course "social structure" aims to provide the students the acquisition of basic knowledge of key processes that characterize our current society. After the course, students are expected to understand better the complex reality, to know different explanations about this reality that have been developed and to have a more critical vision to interpret the social environment. In particular, the subject will present gender inequality, a specific commitment of the Center.

2.3. Importance of learning goals

We live in a complex society. The number of groups with different interests, permanent conflicts and serious imbalances is growing. In a context where these realities are transformed really fast it’s difficult to understand our environment. Social workers have to exercise their profession in the middle of this confusion. More than ever it is necessary to proceed to an analysis of this changing reality; to resolve the complex keys, not always obvious, of our social life and try to put a little order in the chaos that will allow us to make decisions and intervene. In the final analysis, promote the exchange of what we do not like and preserve on the other hand that which deserves it. In this subject, the intention is to contribute to this analysis and to provide the future social workers, intellectual elements that will support their subsequent professional practice.

3. Assessment (1st and 2nd call)

3.1. Assessment tasks (description of tasks, marking system and assessment criteria)

The student must demonstrate that it has achieved the learning outcomes using the following evaluation activities

 

CONTINUOUS EVALUATION SYSTEM

 

The course has an important theoretical content and it’s based on the work of reading, understanding and debate about a dossier of readings that will be provided. The homework will be reading the texts that correspond to each topic explained at class.

 

1.- The theory (T1) will be evaluated through a written test of a knowledge review of the readings’ contents. It’s the 40% of the final mark of the subject . For passing the subject students must achieve in this test a minimum score of 5.

 

2.- All the weeks we will make during the class a serie of practices (T2) supplementary to the lectures and for which is necessary a preliminary reading of the corresponding readings of the week and the participation in the theoretical sessions . One of them will be dedicated to gender’s topic. Students will perform these practices in pre-established groups and will be commented and/or corrected in a collective way. The mark will be the result of the progressive evaluation throughout the course and the realization of a test that each student will do at the end of the course, where the student will be required to solve one of the practices that have been carried out in the course of the semester. Its realization and valuation will be the 30% of the final mark . A minimum of 5 will be necessary to pass the subject.

 

3. - Supervised work (by a tutor)(T6). It’s the 30% of the final mark. It’s required a minimum mark of 5. It will be developed in groups. This part will consist in reading, making a summary and a commentary of a book that will be proposed at the beginning of course. From that text, the teacher may require the answer to a question or the deepening in some concept with use of complementary bibliography.

This is the criteria followed for the evaluation of this work:

• Summary’s quality and evidence of the understanding of the text

• Work’s adaptation to the demanded requirements

• Quality and provision of supplementary documentation • Formal Aspects

• Personal contributions and commentary’s originality

 

These activities may be recovered in the official call of the exam in case of not achieving the enough final average mark.

 

 

SINGLE EVALUATION SYSTEM

Students who want to choose this type of evaluation should inform the teacher in advance. (Check "Important Dates" in calendar ) Students will have to complete the following requirements:

 

1. - Making a comprehensive summary of the readings’ dossier. This part will be the 20% of the final mark.

 

2. - Writing a work. This will be the 30% of the final mark. This activity will consist in reading, making a summary and commentary of a book that will be proposed at the beginning of course. Their specific conditions will be published in the ADD. This is the criteria followed for the evaluation of this work: • Quality of the summary and evidence of the understanding of the text • Work’s adaptation to the demanded requirements • Quality and provision of supplementary documentation • Formal Aspects • Personal contributions and commentary’s originality The summary and the work will be presented at the official announcements: June and/or September. In both activities it’s necessary to obtain a minimum mark of 5.

 

3. – To take a written test on the day of the official call of the exam. This is the 50% of the final mark. It will be necessary to achieve a minimum of 5.

4. Methodology, learning tasks, syllabus and resources

4.1. Methodological overview

The main methodological resource for the development of the subject consists of reading. The different contents are based on series of chosen readings that are the basis of the exhibition activities that will be analyzed and discussed. In small group sessions practical exercises will be done and more specific aspects of the contents will be explained. The goal of the small groups is to reinforce the work done in large groups.

 

4.2. Learning tasks

The learning activities belong to the three modules of teaching and learning.(T1, T2 and T6). Each week there will be a lecture (T1). The exhibition will be done by the teacher and the student has to do a previous work consisted of reading. Also, there will be practice sessions (T2) where the student has to put in practice (through some exercises proposed by the teacher) the knowledge acquired during the lectures and the previous readings. This activity will be mostly develop in small groups. Simultaneously to the previous activities the student will write a work in group (T6) during the semester that will be supervised by a teacher in tutorials and that will have to be submitted at the end of the semester.

WEEKS 2 AND 3

3- Industrial society until today. Social Historical framework. Structure and Social Change. Contemporary Social Structure: features, trends and current debates. Learning Outcomes: The student, - Recognizes the fundamental features that characterized the industrial society. - Understands the process and significance of contemporary change - Distinguishes the crucial aspects of the most recent changes with respect to the classical industrial society. - Knows the contents of the following concepts: industrial society, capitalism, alienation, postindustrial society, network society, globalization… - Critically analyzes the contemporary social reality.

4- Inequality and stratification. Structural dimensions of inequality. Historical models of Stratification. Social mobility. The measure of inequality.

WEEKS 13 AND 14

7. - Ascriptive factors in inequality. Age and gender as a factor of inequality. Gender social’s construction. Domestic field and public field. Ethnicity and inequality.

Learning Outcomes: the student: - Recognizes the weight of the adscriptives factors inequality’s structure. - Knows the conceptual differences between sex and gender. - Understands how age and gender are socially constructed and its relationship to the structure of inequality.- Can point out the main indicators of discrimination toward women in various fields. - Knows how to distinguish between race, ethnicity, prejudice and discrimination. - May explain the relationship between ethnic origin and system of stratification. - Can point to some indicators of discrimination based on age, gender and ethnicity. - Applies the previous knowledge to the understanding of some aspects of the migration phenomenon. 

4.4. Course planning and calendar

THE SCHEDULE OF THE LECTURES WILL TAKE PLACE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROGRAM. EACH WEEK THERE WILL BE A PRACTICE SESSION REFERRED TO THE CONTENT OF THE WEEKLY READINGS. AT THE SAME TIME, STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO GO TUTORING WITH THE TEACHER AT LEAST TWICE DURING THE SEMESTER IN THE ESTABLISHED SCHEDULE IN ORDER TO SHOW THEIR PROGRESS IN THE WORK AND GET SOME INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TEACHER FOR FINISHING IT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUBJECT WILL BE COMPLEMENTED BY SOME ACTIVITIES OF THE CONTINUOUS EVALUATION ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE (ALREADY EXPOSED AT THE BEGINNING):

- Week 3: First report of the supervised work. Students will inform the teacher the chosen topic and the program of their work. 

- Week 4: Deadline to communicate the teacher the choice of single evaluation instead of continuous one.

- Week 11: Second report of the supervised work. Students will present the progress in their works.

- Week 13: The work has to be submitted.

- Week 15: Global test of the theoretical content and delivery or test of the practicals. - Official call: Single evaluation or repetition of the failed activities or tests.

1. Información Básica

1.1. Objetivos de la asignatura

La asignatura y sus resultados previstos responden a los siguientes planteamientos y objetivos:

La asignatura "Estructura social" pretende que cada estudiante adquiera un conocimiento básico de procesos clave que caracterizan a la sociedad actual.  Se espera que el/la estudiante tras cursar la asignatura tenga una mayor compresión de una realidad tremendamente compleja, sea conocedor/a de distintas explicaciones que en torno a esa realidad se han elaborado y haya desarrollado una mirada más crítica al interpretar el entorno social.  En particular se atenderá la desigualdad derivada del género, compromiso específico del centro.

1.2. Contexto y sentido de la asignatura en la titulación

La asignatura se encuentra dentro del módulo C del plan de Estudios, esto es, del módulo que se ocupa de los procesos y problemas sobre los que actúa el Trabajo Social, junto con otras materias como Psicología, Economía ,etc.  En nuestro caso esos procesos y problemas son de carácter social.  Se imparte en el segundo curso, en el segundo cuatrimestre y se cuenta por ello con unos conocimientos generales ya adquiridos en los tres cuatrimestres anteriores, en particular de la asignatura "Sociología general" de primero; de igual forma se vincula en contenidos con la asignatura "Procesos Sociales" de tercero.  De manera más general se espera que tras cursar la asignatura cada estudiante se halle en mejor disposición de afrontar otras asignaturas como los practicum y también algunas optativas.

1.3. Recomendaciones para cursar la asignatura

 

Para cursar esta asignatura y para el correcto proceso de aprendizaje es muy  importante recordar y tener presentes los contenidos de la asignatura "Sociología general" de primer curso. Asimismo es clave estar dispuesto/a a dedicar un tiempo importante a la lectura de los textos seleccionados. 

Excepcionalmente, y por causas sobrevenidas o de calendario, se podrá producir algún cambio de orden menor respecto a lo publicado en esta guía.

2.2. Resultados de aprendizaje

El/la estudiante, para superar esta asignatura, deberá demostrar los siguientes resultados...

- Conoce y comprende de forma crítica los principales aspectos de los desequilibrios de poder y desigualdades sociales  así como los mecanismos fundamentales de discriminación y opresión (en especial los derivados de las relaciones económicas y de trabajo, de género, étnicas y culturales).

- Conoce y comprende de forma crítica los principales aspectos del conflicto social, los mecanismos de poder y autoridad, de dominación, explotación y alienación, y las diferentes perspectivas sociológicas sobre esos procesos y mecanismos.

- Es capaz de analizar y evaluar el impacto de la desigualdad y la discriminación en el trabajo con personas en contextos determinados y en situaciones problemáticas.

2.3. Importancia de los resultados de aprendizaje

Vivimos en una sociedad tremendamente compleja.  El número de grupos con intereses distintos, conflictos permanentes y graves desequilibrios es creciente.  En un contexto en que estas realidades se transforman a un ritmo acelerado se experimenta una gran dificultad para comprender nuestro entorno.  Los trabajadores sociales han de ejercer su profesión en el seno de este desconcierto.  Más que nunca es preciso proceder a un análisis de esta realidad cambiante; desentrañar las complejas claves, no siempre evidentes, de nuestra vida social y procurar poner un poco de orden en ese caos que nos permita tomar decisiones e intervenir. En definitiva, promover el cambio de aquello que no nos gusta y preservar por otra parte aquello que lo merece.  En esta asignatura se pretende contribuir a ese análisis y dotar a las y los futuros trabajadores sociales de elementos intelectuales que sustenten su posterior ejercicio profesional.

3. Evaluación

3.1. Tipo de pruebas y su valor sobre la nota final y criterios de evaluación para cada prueba

El/la estudiante deberá demostrar que ha alcanzado los resultados de aprendizaje previstos mediante las siguientes actividades de evaluacion

SISTEMA DE EVALUACIÓN CONTINUA

La asignatura tiene un importante contenido teórico y en esencia se fundamenta en el trabajo de lectura, comprensión y debate en torno al dossier de lecturas que será proporcionado.  Es por tanto clave el compromiso que el estudiante regularmente asistente adquiere frente a este requisito.  El trabajo no presencial (T7) será destinado fundamentalmente a la lectura de los textos que a cada tema correspondan con anterioridad a las sesiones expositivas y al trabajo personal y en grupo para las actividades T2 y T6. El sistema de evaluación continua exige la participación activa en las sesiones de T1, T2 y T6, que están necesariamente vinculadas.

 

1.- La teoría  (T1) será evaluada a través de una prueba escrita de revisión de conocimientos sobre los contenidos de las lecturas y se realizará el día de la convocatoria oficial.  Tendrá un valor del 40% de la nota global de la asignatura.   Para la superación de la asignatura los/as alumnos/as deberán alcanzar en esta prueba una calificación mínima de 5.

 

2.- Todas las semanas se realizarán en clase una serie de prácticas (T2) complementarias a los sesiones expositivas y para las cuales es necesaria la lectura previa de la/s lectura/s correspondientes a la semana y la participación en las sesiones teóricas. Una de ellas se dedicará a la temática de género. Los/as alumnos/as realizarán estas prácticas en grupos preestablecidos. La calificación será el resultado de la evaluación progresiva a lo largo del curso que puede incluir la realización de una prueba individual que cada estudiante realizará al final del cuatrimestre.  Su realización y valoración computará por un 30% de la nota global. Se exigirá una nota mínima de 5 para que promedie en el cómputo global.

 

3.- Trabajo tutelado.  (T6) 30% de la nota. Igualmente será exigible un 5 como nota mínima.

Se realizará en grupo.

 

Consistirá en la lectura, resumen y comentario de un libro que será propuesto a comienzo de curso.  Sobre la base de ese texto el profesor puede requerir la contestación de alguna cuestión o la profundización en algún concepto con utilización de bibliografía complementaria.

 Para la calificación de los trabajos se tendrán en cuenta los siguientes criterios:

  •     Calidad del resumen y evidencia de la compresión del texto
  •     Adecuación del trabajo a los requisitos demandados
  •     Análisis crítico a partir de los contenidos de la asignatura  
  •     En su caso, pertinencia, calidad y aportación de la documentación complementaria  
  •     Aspectos formales

En el caso de optar por esta modalidad de evaluación se insiste en la vinculación de todas las actividades de la asignatura.  Por tanto la superación de las T2 y T6 exige la asistencia regular (80% de las sesiones) a las T1. De no cumplirse este requisito el estudiante será derivado al sistema de evaluación única. En su caso, T1 y T2 podrán ser recuperadas en la convocatoria oficial en caso de no alcanzar el aprobado en la nota media final.

 

 

SISTEMA DE EVALUACIÓN ÚNICA.

A los/as estudiantes que deseen someterse a este tipo de evaluación se les recomienda que se pongan en contacto con el profesor. En cualquier caso deberán cumplir los siguientes requisitos:

 

1.- Redacción de un resumen comprensivo del dossier de lecturas y realización de dos prácticas disponibles en Moodle. Su calificación equivaldrá a un 30% de la nota global.

 

 

2.- Elaboración un trabajo. Computará por el 20 % de la calificación global. 

 

Consistirá en la lectura, resumen y comentario de un libro que será propuesto a comienzo de curso.  Sus condiciones particulares se publicarán en el ADD.

 Para la calificación de los trabajos se tendrán en cuenta los siguientes criterios:

  •     Calidad del resumen y evidencia de la compresión del texto
  •     Adecuación del trabajo a los requisitos demandados
  •     Análisis crítico a partir de los contenidos de la asignatura  
  •     En su caso, pertinencia, calidad y aportación de la documentación complementaria  
  •     Aspectos formales

 El resumen con las prácticas y el trabajo se entregarán en las convocatorias oficiales: junio y/o septiembre.  En ambos se deberá obtener una nota mínima de 5 para que promedien.

 

3.-Realización de una prueba escrita el día de la convocatoria oficial .  50% de la calificación.  Será preciso alcanzar una nota mínima de 5 para sumar el resto de las calificaciones.

4. Metodología, actividades de aprendizaje, programa y recursos

4.1. Presentación metodológica general

 

El principal recurso metodológico para el desarrollo de la asignatura consiste en la lectura comprensiva y su análisis.  Los distintos contenidos se articulan en torno a una serie de lecturas escogidas que constituyen el punto de partida para las actividades expositivas donde se analizarán y discutirán.  En las sesiones de grupo pequeño se realizarán ejercicios de carácter práctico o se insistirá en aspectos más específicos de los contenidos; en cualquier caso el trabajo en grupo pequeño reforzará el realizado en los grupos grandes.

4.2. Actividades de aprendizaje

Las actividades de aprendizaje se organizan a través de las tres modalidades de enseñanza-aprendizaje. (T1, T2 y T6). Y que se impartirán y seguirán de manera combinada: presencial y virtual

Cada semana tendrá lugar una sesión magistral (T1) La exposición estará a cargo del profesor o profesora sobre la base de un trabajo previo de lectura por parte del estudiante.

Se desarrollarán también actividades prácticas  (T2) donde el/la estudiante, de manera activa, habrá de aplicar, sobre ejercicios propuestos por el profesor o la profesora, los conocimientos teóricos adquiridos en sus lecturas previas y en las clases magistrales. Buena parte de esta actividad se desarrollará en pequeños grupos de trabajo.

 

Simultáneamente a las actividades anteriores el/la estudiante realizará un trabajo en grupo ( T6)a lo largo del cuatrimestre que será supervisado en sesiones de tutoría y que deberá presentar al final del mismo.

2.- Introducción: El concepto de Estructura Social.  El debate estructura-acción . Condicionantes estructurales de los problemas sociales.

- Comprende como se estudian las relaciones sociales desde la perspectiva del a estructura social

- Asimila y distingue las distintas posturas teóricas que explican el funcionamiento de la sociedad

- Reconoce la importancia que tienen los factores estructurales en la explicación y comprensión de los problemas sociales

- Aprecia la complejidad del análisis social y la necesidad de una visión crítica y analítica

 

 SEMANAS 2 Y 3

3- De la sociedad industrial hasta hoy.  Marco Histórico Social. Estructura y Cambio Social . La Estructura Social contemporánea: rasgos, tendencias y debates actuales.

- Reconoce los rasgos fundamentales que caracterizan la sociedad industrial.

- Comprende el proceso y alcance de los cambios contemporáneos

- Distingue los aspectos cruciales de los cambios más recientes respecto a la sociedad industrial clásica.

4- Desigualdad y Estratificación. Dimensiones Estructurales de la desigualdad.  Modelos Históricos de estratificación.  Movilidad social. La medida de la desigualdad.

     5.1.-  Las teorías clásicas de Marx, Weber y el funcionalismo. Análisis y valoración crítica de los distintos enfoques .

            5.1.1.- Teoría marxista de las clases sociales

            5.1.2.- Teoría funcional de Émile Durkheim.

           5.1.3.- Max Weber: Clase, status y poder

            5.1.4.- Análisis,  valoración y comparación de las teorías clásicas

 

5.2.- Teorías recientes sobre la estratificación y la desigualdad.

             5.2.1.- Desarrollo de la teoría funcionalista de la     estratificación social: Talcott   Parsons , Kingsley Davis y  Wilbert Moore.

             5.2.2.- Teoría crítica del conflicto : Neomarxismo:Erik Olin Wright

             5.2.3.-  Teorías no críticas del conflicto: Ralf Dahrendorf. Neoweberianos :J.Goldthorpe

 

Resultados de aprendizaje: El alumno,

- Conoce el contenido de las principales teorías sobre la desigualdad.

- Sabe distinguir claramente los paradigmas conservador y crítico en la explicación de la desigualdad.

- Aplica correctamente a una realidad social concreta elementos de las distintas teorías.

 

 SEMANAS 9, 10, 11 y 12

6.- La estructura de clases contemporánea.  La transformación del trabajo y sus consecuencias sobre la desigualdad . Globalización, dualización y exclusión social

 

El Alumno

- Conoce el “mapa de clases" actual y reconoce los rasgos propios de cada clase

- Comprende cuales son los factores clave de la desigualdad en las sociedades desarrolladas, entre ellas España

-  Conoce los cambios sustanciales en el ámbito laboral y es capaz de trasladar su impacto sobre la estructura de la desigualdad

-  Es conocedor de los grandes desequilibrios mundiales y puede manejar e interpretar indicadores básicos

-  Conoce el significado del concepto “exclusión social”

-  Analiza críticamente información sobre la realidad de la desigualdad y valora le papel clave que tiene sobre las oportunidades vitales de grupos e individuos

 

 SEMANAS 13, 14 y 15

7-  Factores adscriptivos en la desigualdad. Edad, género y etnia como factor de desigualdad. La construcción social del género. Esfera doméstica y esfera pública. 

El alumno:

- Reconoce el peso de los factores adscriptivos en la estructura de la desigualdad

- Conoce las diferencias conceptuales entre sexo y género

- Comprende como se construyen socialmente la edad y género y su relación con la estructura de la desigualdad

- Puede señalar los principales indicadores de discriminación hacia las mujeres en distintas esferas

- Sabe distinguir raza, etnia, prejuicio y discriminación

- Puede explicar la relación existente entre procedencia étnica y  sistema de estratificación

- Puede señalar algunos indicadores de discriminación por edad, género y etnia

- Aplica los anteriores conocimientos a la comprensión de algunos aspectos del fenómeno migratorio

 

 

 

 

 

4.4. Planificación de las actividades de aprendizaje y calendario de fechas clave

EL CALENDARIO DE LAS SESIONES EXPOSITIVAS SE DESARROLLARÁ SEGÚN LO ESTABLECIDO EN EL PROGRAMA.  

A SU VEZ, LOS ESTUDIANTES HABRÁN DE PASAR TUTORÍA CON EL PROFESOR AL MENOS EN DOS OCASIONES A LO LARGO DEL CURSO EN EL HORARIO ESTABLECIDO CON EL FIN DE MOSTRAR LOS AVANCES EN RELACIÓN CON EL TRABAJO DE CURSO Y OBTENER LAS INDICACIONES PARA LLEVARLO A TÉRMINO.

EL DESARROLLO DE LA ASIGNATURA SE COMPLEMENTARÁ CON UNA SERIE DE PRUEBAS DESTINADAS A LA EVALUACIÓN CONTINUA SEGÚN LA SIGUIENTE PROGRAMACIÓN (ya expuesta al comienzo):

 

  • SEMANA 3: PRIMER INFORME TRABAJO TUTELADO.  LOS ESTUDIANTES COMUNICARÁN EL TEMA ELEGIDO Y    EXPONDRÁN SU PROGRAMA DE TRABAJO
  • SEMANA 11: SEGUNDO INFORME TRABAJO TUTELADO.  LOS ESTUDIANTES EXPONDRÁN LOS AVANCES OBTENIDOS EN LA REALIZACIÓN DEL TRABAJO.
  • SEMANA 13: ENTREGA DEL TRABAJO TUTELADO
  • SEMANA 15: ENTREGA, SI ASÍ SE REQUIERE, DEL DOSSIER DE PRÁCTICAS T2
  • CONVOCATORIA OFICIAL: EVALUACIÓN ÚNICA Y RECUPERACIÓN EN SU CASO DE LAS PRUEBAS NO SUPERADAS
